The Conception Of Cro ( An excerpt from The Last Blackbird)

The Last Blackbird The earth’s first monarchy springs forth from the union between the Eternal Goddess Eagle and the ethereal creature Cro in the forge of time. The scales of an erstwhile peaceful earth turn adversely as human history finds itself in a vortex of struggles occasioned by the intense persecution, oppression and captivity the descendants of Cro and Eagle experience. Would the inhabitants of earth know once again its pristine and peaceful beginnings?
Colonialism and human experiences of generational suffering are enduring memories in the annals of time. The Last Blackbird, the first of a trilogy, explores these unfathomable consequences and the possibility of a world devoid of mutual distrust in its spell-binding, fluid narrative.    When Cro first opened his eyes, the darkness swallowed him. His entire being was submerged under an obsidian sky and the immense gravity of night pressed down on him. His body surrendered to spasmodic convulsions, as a neurotic tremor coursed through his veins, like ripples on the sea. The sensation gnawed at him, pulling him apart, Yet, he did not move. Time embedded his existence and as he took his first breath, the kiss of death crescendoed into life.

Cro looked down and pondered over every limb. His hands affixed themselves to his legs and his body curled into the formation of a fist. He attempted to move but found that he could not will himself to do so. Engorged in the belly of Gaia, Cro received the gift of life.
He had spent a thousand years buried underground, his spine lodged into the rock. Time began to pulse and with every moment he gained strength. Gaia shifted beneath him, creating a powerful transcendence. The earth spoke through him and the oppressive darkness began to lift.

He saw her.

The moment their eyes met, his blood cycled between cold and  heat. Reticent, he no longer felt liquid run through his veins.

The first thing he noticed were the sleek silver feathers, which covered the contours of her body. Her essence unfolded before him, creating a powerful impression. She floated through the air and when she brought her face towards his, her breath caressed him.

Intrigued by the apparition before him, Cro held his own breath. He stood aghast, as the world began to spiral and he could not catch himself fast enough. Only then, did he feel the movement of her wings as she placed them beneath his body. A current of air surrounded him, bewildering Cro.

She lifted him in the air, using her beak.Higher and higher into the air they rose as the darkness shifted from black to grey.

In the distance, a thick cloud covered the horizon. It was almost invisible but the tinge of murkiness caught the light. This was the force field of time and Cro wondered what lay beyond it.

His flying companion did not waver in her course. Shrieking, she hurled her body forward with her beak set into the shape of a dagger. She punctured this wall, sending an explosion of glass and debris against the light. Her mouth released Cro and his body dropped down. He reached out for her but failed. He fell with increasing velocity until he hit a plateau. A long rock that jutted out from the mountain lodged in his flesh. Pain arrested him and he gritted his teeth.

His companion, who was called Eagle, descended upon him. For the longest time, she remained in silence. But now she spoke:

His flying companion did not waver in her course. Shrieking, she set her beak into a dagger and hurled herself forward. The impact ruptured the veil, setting off an explosion of glass and debris. Cro slipped from her grasp and fell with increasing velocity until he hit a plateau. Pain arrested him, as jagged rocks lodged into his flesh and he gritted his teeth.

Eagle Speaks:

I will tell you of dawn,

How we premeditated over destiny.

There were not enough stars,

That could boldly capture these hearts.

Lives lost beyond,

The sweltering heat of time.

They have spoken your name,

Claiming Providence.

Phrases strung out,

With molecular bits of dust.

An extraction of knowledge

That came down upon you.

Gripping your attention,

With the full force of distraction.

Microscopic cylindrical containers,

Eyes filled with every inch of promise.

This is no declaration,

A statement of defiance,

No battle hymn,

For the broken.

Your glass is filled with broken promises,

And a vendetta against your enemy.

Those who wore the jacket of deceit,

Over their freshly plucked bouquet of hatred.

And those whose lives

You have yet to touch.

Still the fire is burning bright,

Lighting your body in shame.

A laugh escapes you now.

Is it a coven of love?

Is it more than success?

Is it a canteen of antiseptic philosophy?

It is all nonsense to you.

But then, I am a complex puzzle.

A trickling mellow touch of liquid

In a case of crystal.

Eagle’s words inundated Cro with passion and he wanted to hold her in his arms. Her soft feathers danced under his palms, as their mouths met at the intersection of the future and the past. He molded with her and his hands searched for what he did not know.

Her talons met with human fingertips. They crafted ecstasy into a sea of passion, while desire clamored for attention.

The feathers peeled away from Eagle’s body, revealing a dark-skinned woman.

For a moment Cro was startled. He hadn’t expected to see this beautiful woman emerge from inside the shell of a bird. Somehow the energy between their skin, had melted away the enchantment and she no longer remained as an Eagle but had revealed her true form to him. He gazed upon her in wonder, while his heart moved at a rapid pace.

“How is it possible?” He whispered, finding the words that had nearly escaped him.

Eagle’s talons began to dissolve, taking the shape of human fingers. When they had fully transformed, she touched his lips, beckoning him towards silence. It was only then that Cro could understand. Her nature was dualistic. A woman with the spirit of an Eagle that ran through her veins

She was more beautiful than he imagined and at that moment, between unspoken sentiments, he loved her.

Driven by their primal nature, they created a new universe and built a legacy across their skin. Eagle gave her final cry and they reached the precipice of desire as they collapsed into each other, before falling into a consecrated sleep.
